Stand up and speak out during Hunger Action Month! Four ways you can help …

September is Hunger Action Month — a time of year when anti-hunger advocates across the country speak out about hunger and the many issues that impact food-insecure families across the nation.

According to the latest data from Feeding America’s report on “The Impact of Coronavirus on Food Insecurity,” more than 152,000 people in Foodlink’s 10-county service area are considered food insecure. That figure represents a 10% increase compared to pre-pandemic levels.

There are many ways to get involved and lend your support to Foodlink and the many people we serve during Hunger Action Month. Here are four ways you can help …

1) DONATE.

Visit Foodlink’s Hunger Action Month campaign page to make a donation and support our food-banking operations and our many food-related programs that address the root causes of food insecurity. Did you know that for every $1 you donate, that’s the equivalent of 3 meals for our neighbors in need?

2) COMMIT.

A simple act can go a long way. Donate a few hours of your time to volunteer and support our work! We have several shifts open in our distribution center, or with our programs, such as the Curbside Market! Visit our Volunteer page to learn more.

You can also show your support for Foodlink by wearing orange and raising awareness on Sept. 17 — Hunger Action Day!

3) LEARN.

Foodlink is one of many anti-hunger organizations across the country advocating for change and addressing both the symptoms and root causes of hunger. You can learn more about hunger locally by visiting Feeding America’s interactive map that shows the pandemic’s impact on hunger.

You can also learn more about the issues by visiting other nonprofit websites, such as Feeding America, the Food, Research & Action Center (FRAC), Hunger Solutions NY, and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Read up and get educated!

We’ll be adding resources to this post throughout the month. Stay tuned for updates on:

>> Rochester’s Food Policy Council plans

>> Pandemic EBT Benefits

>> Foodlink’s local work with the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program

>> Child Nutrition Reauthorization

>> National Voter Registration Day (9/28)

4) SPEAK UP.

Tell your elected officials that nobody should have to make #ImpossibleChoices and worry about how and when to get their next meal! Visit our Advocacy page to find contact information for federal representatives throughout our service area.

This fall, Foodlink will be advocating for a strong Child Nutrition Reauthorization in Congress. The legislation includes changes to federal nutrition programs and school meal programs. Be on the lookout for updates throughout the fall on how YOU can get involved.
